Training Teachers at School for Autistic Children in Shanghai |
|
Currently, there are 11 universities offering bachelor degrees in special education in China, but there are no specialized programs which address the treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). There are also currently no state-run training or research institutes for ASD and only a few dozen or so private programs or centers which address the needs of this underserved population segment. As a result, the vast majority of individuals with ASD in China lack access to basic systematic training and intervention. Because autistic children are not be able to receive adequate attention and care in Chinese public schools, most have no choice but stay at home. In this environment, family-based training and development is the only course of action available, and many of the privately-owned treatment centers are started by parents of autistic children.
SVG is working with a Shanghai-based nonprofit that provides targeted intervention for children with ASD as well as training and support for their parents. The project goal is to provide expert training in ASD interventions for the organization's staff in order to boost the level of care and establish a benchmark for the quality of ASD interventions offered in China.
